TOTALENERGIES MARKETING GHANA LAUNCHES THE HELMET4LIFE INITIATIVE
As part of its Corporate Social Responsibility commitment, TotalEnergies Marketing Ghana (TEMG) PLC has locally launched the Helmet4Life initiative where over 3,000 helmets will be distributed freely to motor riders across several locations in Ghana over a period of months.
The Helmet 4 Life initiative, championed by the TotalEnergies Foundation program, is a global campaign that aims to provide 100,000 motorcycle helmets, compliant with the most stringent safety standards, in 40 countries across three continents (Africa, Asia and the Americas). The helmet distribution campaign is accompanied by a unique road safety awareness session, particularly focused on motorized two-wheelers.
In attendance at the launch were the Managing Director of TEMG PLC, Mr. Olufemi Babajide, members of staff of TEMG PLC, the Brand Ambassador of TEMG PLC, Mr. Stephen “Tornado” Appiah, COP Francis Doku of the MTTD of the Ghana Police Service, officials of the National Road Safety Authority as well as executives of the National Okada riders association.
According to data acquired from WHO, 28% of fatal road accidents worldwide involve motor riders, a figure which can reach over 75% in certain countries. The Helmet 4 Life initiative targets these countries, where most of the population do not have access to quality helmets at affordable prices, said Mr. Olufemi Babajide, in his opening address.
The Health, Safety, Security, Environment and Quality (HSSEQ) Manager, Mr. Frank Boamah, took the motor riders through an interactive road safety training session where he explained the 4 key principles of motorcycle safety:
1. Principle No. 1 – I avoid risky situations.
2. Principle No. 2 – I protect myself and others.
3. Principle No. 3 – I respect the rules.
4. Principle No. 4 – I maintain my motorcycle.
In all, 450 helmets were distributed to motor riders at Darkuman TotalEnergies and Kotobabi TotalEnergies. Other locations where the initiative would take place include Aflao, Kumasi, Ashaiman and Tamale.
