Nana Kwaku Boateng Basic School in Koforidua has emerged as the winner of the 2026 VIA Safe Mobility for All Young People Programme national finals, securing 83.63 points to outperform seven competing schools and claim the top prize of €4,000.
The grand finale, held in Kumasi on October 21, 2026, brought together student road safety ambassadors from across the country to showcase innovative and practical solutions to road safety challenges within their schools and communities. KNUST Senior High School placed second, while Sacred Heart Senior High School secured third position.
The programme is sponsored by the TotalEnergies Foundation and implemented in Ghana by the Oli Best Road Safety Organisation, with support from TotalEnergies Marketing Ghana PLC and other key stakeholders. It aims to equip young people with the knowledge and skills to identify road hazards, promote responsible road-use behaviour, and champion safer mobility within their communities.
Speaking at the event, Luke Kojo Asamoah, Acting Area Manager for TotalEnergies in Kumasi, reaffirmed the company's unwavering commitment to road safety, emphasizing that safety remains a core value underpinning both its operations and community engagement initiatives.
Addressing participants, he noted that TotalEnergies' commitment to safety extends beyond its service stations and operational sites to the roads used daily by the public, especially children. He explained that the VIA programme empowers students to identify risks, educate their peers, and encourage safer road-use practices in their schools and communities.
According to him, the participating students demonstrated that young people can play a significant role in advancing road safety awareness and reducing road traffic risks through advocacy and leadership.
Through activities such as safety walks, hazard mapping, action planning, and community sensitisation campaigns, the initiative provides students with practical road safety knowledge and experience. Beyond the competition, the programme nurtures a new generation of road safety ambassadors capable of driving lasting behavioural change.
Established in 2019 by the TotalEnergies Foundation in partnership with the Michelin Corporate Foundation, the VIA programme promotes safe mobility among young people under the age of 18. Following its national victory, Nana Kwaku Boateng Basic School is expected to progress to the next stages of the international competition, with the opportunity to represent Ghana at the global finals in Paris, France..
